About Laura B
The founder and designer of Laura B Collection Particulière is Laura Bortolami, born in Rome, Italian father and Dutch-Indonesian mother. After studying in Italy she graduated in translation specialized in law and economics at the E.T.I. University of Geneva, Switzerland.
Mid 80’s thanks to Caterina Salvador, then Armani’s assistant, changed her direction completely and started in fashion.
Laura began selling Giorgio Armani’s collection in his showroom in Milan. Then worked for Gianni Versace, Anna Molinari, and almost ten years for Dolce & Gabbana. The experience of working with some of the best designers in the world prepared Laura for her future enterprise. She learned both ends of her business: the commercial as well as the designing.
In the early 90’s Laura had her first “flirt” with design: a small collection of bags created from original 1920’s jais pieces she bought from Franco Jacassi in a vintage fair in Milan.
Laura applied the same passion for the aesthetics of the beginning of the century to jewellery a few years later, while living in Avignon, South of France.
She took to pieces vintage buckles, earrings or watches which she found in the ‘brocantes’ markets and she transformed them into her first necklaces by mixing them with wooden, metal or crystal beads. Since each piece was unique, so was born the “Laura B Collection Particulière”.
Right from the beginning the collection attracted a very selected market. Her first client was Antonioli in Milan. Then Corso Como (Milan), Joyce (Hong Kong), Barney’s (New York), Browns (London), and Neiman Marcus (USA).
In 1995, Laura moved to Barcelona where she is currently still living with her 9 years old daughter Lea.
In 1999 she left Dolce & Gabbana to dedicate herself only to her own collection.
Laura B started with jewellery but with time and know-how it grew with other accessories like belts and bags. Bags are nowadays a very strong part of the brand.
In the beginning of 2003 the Men’s collection was born. Laura’s favorite men’s accessory, cufflinks, were accompanied by more jewellery and belts. Old coins, stones, sterling silver and a hint of mesh to begin with.
Through the collections the mesh took more relevance and little by little became the signature material of the brand, both for Women’s and Men’s collections.
Laura still enjoys mixing different materials from different places and combines the mesh with stones, chains, crystals, leather, crocodile, python, feathers, silk, lace, coins, etc. It is a constant challenge to find renewal within the limits of one material.
The expertise with mesh brought her to collaborate with other brands. For Jean Paul Gaultier, she made his mesh fabulous dresses, jackets and accessories for Haute Couture and Prêt à Porter.
Laura B maintains after so many years her handmade soul. All her pieces are carefully made by hand one by one in her atelier in Barcelona.
The brand through the years has extended the international distribution. Today one can find Laura B in the best boutiques in the world.
